When Jurgen Klopp first announced he was going to leave Liverpool, there was only one man the majority of the fans wanted to replace him.

Xabi Alonso was doing wonders in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen and he was about to create history by winning the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title.

Yes, Liverpool fans were gutted that Klopp was heading for the exit door, but they wanted their former midfielder to replace him, and in the end, he stayed put and signed a new contract.

The Reds didn’t get the man they wanted from Leverkusen, but how about still trying to lure one of their top talents to Anfield?

Florian Wirtz is regarded as one of the best playmakers in Europe and, as of this moment, he is trying to help Germany win Euro 2024.

Sources have told HITC that Liverpool scouted the 21-year-old last season and he has a fan in Tottenham Hotspur boss, Ange Postecoglou.

The former Celtic manager labelled Wirtz as ‘unbelievable’ and explained how he has appreciated him since his days at Parkhead, as he told ITV Sport.

Wirtz suffered a big injury a few years ago which meant that he missed out on a major tournament with Germany, but he is now getting his chance to showcase what he is all about.

And so far, Postecoglou is loving what the quick-thinking midfielder is producing because he is going from strength to strength as a footballer.

Ange Postecoglou praises Germany star Florian Wirtz

“I am a huge fan of Wirtz,” said Postecoglou. “We played against him when I was at Celtic in the Europa League. He was only 19 and unbelievable then.

“He had the knee injury which meant that he missed a bit of football.”

Liverpool’s transfer interest in Florian Wirtz

Arne Slot is now getting to work at Liverpool and fans are eager to see who the Dutchman brings in this summer as his first bits of signings.

A player like Wirtz would be amazing for the club and he would elevate the club’s midfield.

Yes, players like Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott showcased improvement last season, whilst Dominik Szoboszlai started well before fading away.

You just feel a player like Wirtz is a level above and he would compliment players like Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo in the middle of the park.
