Wolves stunned Southampton earlier today when coming back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 despite having ten men.

Julen Lopetegui watched his side go behind after Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring, before Mario Lemina was handed a second yellow card by Jarred Gillet in the 27th minute to make things harder for Wolves.

The Gabon international’s dismissal confused many at first – including the BT Sport Score panel – although the official reason was told to Nathan Judah of The Express and Star during the game, leaving him shocked.

What’s the story?

Well, Lemina was handed a second yellow by Gillett after he “ran towards the referee aggressively” – according to Judah, the Wolves correspondent for The Express and Star.

Judah was left in disbelief at the official reasoning, and we’re sure thousands of Wolves fans will be stunned as well.

If that is enough to pick up a yellow card nowadays, then the game really is gone.

Thankfully, justice was carried out as Wolves eventually picked up all three points, thanks to a late winner from Joao Gomes on his debut for the Old Gold.

Unfortunately, Lemina will have to carry out his one-game suspension, as bans for a second yellow cannot be appealed against like they can for a straight red card.

Wolves 2-1 Southampton provides opportunity for Joao Gomes

Football is a funny old game, and Gillett’s strange decision to send Lemina off could be the platform Gomes needs to propel himself into English football.

Both Lemina and Gomes play in midfield – with the Wolves No.5 now absent for Saturday’s clash against Bournemouth, the £15m signing from Flamengo could be rewarded with a start by Lopetegui.

If the Brazilian can build on his dream debut on the south coast, then Lemina may have to settle for a place on the bench from now on.
