Former Tottenham dynamo Etienne Capoue has said his two years with the north London side were the best of his career. Despite recently winning silverware with Villarreal.

Speaking to the Athletic, the 33-year-old midfielder revealed that he enjoyed his time at Spurs despite spending just two seasons with the club. Capoue was signed in 2013 but left in 2015 to join Watford after losing his place in the first team. The veteran joined Villarreal in 2020.

Despite being shunned by both Tim Sherwood and Mauricio Pochettino, the former France international didn’t regret his time with Spurs. Moreover, Capoue claims that it was the best two years of his career.

Capoue joined in the famous summer of 2013 where Tottenham went crazy in the transfer market, signing seven players following the departure of Gareth Bale. And for the midfielder, his time in the English capital was some of the best in his life despite his most recent year with Villarreal.

The 33-year-old said: “I didn’t think too much about the football in England, I just thought it would be the same as in France, and because I didn’t watch it, I didn’t know that it wasn’t. I soon realised that I had to work out more, including before and after training.

Capoue added: “I watched the best players at Spurs and how they trained and played. I had some problems with injuries and the coaches not picking me, but my two years in Tottenham were my best two years in football.”

Whilst the French midfielder never made much of an impact at Spurs, it is telling that Capoue still reveres the time he spent with Tottenham six years after leaving the north London side.

Indeed, the lessons learnt at Spurs seem to have done Capoue well since leaving. With the midfielder a European champions and now a leader in the UEFA Champions League this season with Villarreal.
