Danny Rose was in a bullish mood about his Tottenham future in November 2019.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, he said he was determined to see out his Spurs deal and he ‘won’t be going anywhere’ until it runs out in 2021.
So far, Rose has been true to his word but he doesn’t have a Tottenham shirt number and is training away from the squad.
What’s happened since Rose’s comments to make him slip from the first team picture, but still not move away?
Pochettino’s depature
Mauricio Pochettino was a big fan of Rose when he was Tottenham manager.
The Englishman said in February that he knew the Argentine’s departure would be bad news for his own Tottenham prospects.
Jose Mourinho has come in and signed Sergio Reguilon, which has shunted Rose down to third choice in the left back pecking order.
It would be fourth choice but Ryan Sessegnon has gone on loan to Hoffenheim.
Rose has a good relationship with Gareth Southgate at international level, but he has slipped completely off the international radar.
England are scratching around for a left back. Ben Chilwell is injured, Kieran Trippier has been playing there and last month’s squad was named without a left back present.
But Rose still wasn’t picked. When he was in the Spurs and England sides, he had a good relationship with both managers. That’s not so true now.

Loss of form
In that Standard interview, Rose admitted he made mistakes in games last season.
Ultimately, he hasn’t been able to prove to Mourinho or Southgate that he is back on his best form.
He wasn’t able to showcase his talent at Newcastle either and they didn’t make his loan spell permanent.

Why hasn’t Rose moved?
Perhaps Rose is determined to see out his contract as a Tottenham player out of principle.
Eurosport reported links with Italian club Genoa last week but nothing happened on that score.
There was also talk of a loan switch to Middlesbrough before the EFL deadline tomorrow, but the Northern Echo say that won’t be happening.
If Rose does stay at Tottenham all season, it seems so unlikely he will be in England’s squad for Euro 2021, despite the uncertainty at left back.
That’s maybe not how he saw things turning out when he made those claims about seeing out his Spurs deal back in November 2019.
