Tottenham Hotspur have a big problem in the form of Hugo Lloris.

Despite playing two World Cup finals and winning one of them, Lloris is potentially Spurs’ biggest liability right now.

Before the World Cup in Qatar and after it, the France international has looked prone to the sort of mistakes a 36-year-old goalkeeper probably shouldn’t be making.

And honestly, it makes the Nick Pope links look all the more disappointing that the Lilywhites never got him in.

Last year, The Daily Mail reported that the North Londoners were keen on Pope, then at Burnley.

In fact, Tottenham’s original interest stretches back eight years or so, with The Mirror reporting in 2015 that Spurs were keen on signing him even back then – when he was valued at only £750,000.

Pope joined Newcastle United last year and Bruno Guimaraes has just labelled him the world’s best goalkeeper, via an interview with Sky Sports on Tuesday night.

And to think, this is someone who Tottenham – and Aston Villa – could’ve signed for under £1 million at one stage.

This is clearly a player who Spurs have long admired prior to his switch to St James’s Park.

And although every club has a story of regret regarding a player who they could’ve signed for next to nothing at one stage, the fact – or at least belief – that Pope is now among the world’s finest might make this a bitter pill for for those at Hotspur Way.
