Matt Doherty Spurs contract has been trending online with many Tottenham fans eager to know more about the bizarre deadline day decision.

The north Londoners agreed a loan deal with Atlético Madrid for the Republic of Ireland international after finally securing a £40m deal to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.

However, the loan deal ended up becoming a permanent move with Tottenham eventually terminating Doherty’s contract, after learning that they were already at their FIFA limit for loan exits.

So, how much did Tottenham have to pay for that mistake? Let’s take a look…

Well, Tottenham already have Sergio Reguilon, Harry Winks, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie out on loan, and were seemingly unaware of the FIFA regulations which state that no more than eight players can be out on loan at the same time.

According to the Evening Standard, the Irishman’s contract in N17 was set to expire on June 30th.

Therefore, Spurs would have needed to pay Doherty his remaining wages, with the 31-year-old earning £65,385-a-week in north London since his £14.7m move from Wolves in August 2020.

From now until the end of June, that works out at a sum of £1.3m for Tottenham.

These specific details have not been documented by other outlets, so it is possible – and in truth, fairly likely – that Atlético Madrid paid that £1.3m fee for Spurs, or at least a fraction of it.

However, those at the Wanda Metropolitano may have argued that it was Tottenham’s mistake, and they should pay for it, with the likelihood of Spurs pulling the plug on the deal low after it was already made clear that Doherty would be third choice behind Porro and Emerson Royal.

Cancelling the agreement altogether would have surely left Antonio Conte with a very frustrated figure on his hands.

It may have been a slightly embarrassing moment for the likes of Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici, but at least the signing of Porro was finalised despite a brief scare when talks collapsed ahead of deadline day.
