The Los Angeles Lakers’ decision to draft Bronny James has long been viewed through one lens: that it was done at the direct request of LeBron James.
But new insight suggests the move was far more calculated, and driven internally rather than demanded from the outside.
Bronny’s selection immediately sparked debate around nepotism, roster strategy, and whether the Lakers were prioritising relationships over basketball value. As the dust settled, questions continued to linger about who really pushed the decision through.
According to one well-connected NBA voice, the truth may be simpler and more revealing than many assumed.

LA Lakers drafted Bronny without LeBron James’ request
Speaking about the situation, Ramona Shelburne dismissed the idea that LeBron James or his camp pressured the Lakers into drafting his son.
“I don’t think LeBron asked the Lakers to draft Bronny. I don’t think he or Rich Paul actually said [anything]. I’m telling you they did it. I think they did this because they thought LeBron would like that,” Shelburne said.
The Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, a move that raised eyebrows given his modest college production. Internally, however, the decision was framed as a goodwill gesture toward the franchise’s most important figure, rather than a basketball-first gamble.
From the Lakers’ perspective, maintaining alignment with LeBron carried value beyond the box score, especially at a stage when every decision could influence his long-term commitment and mindset.
Other NBA teams also showed interest in Bronny, says Ramona Shelburne
Shelburne also revealed that the Lakers were not alone in monitoring Bronny’s draft status.
She added: “The Golden State Warriors considered him. The Dallas Mavericks with Nico Harrison over there, okay? And the Phoenix Suns. All three of those teams had interest in Bronny.
“Would they have actually taken him? I don’t know.”
While that interest does not guarantee Bronny would have been drafted elsewhere, it does challenge the narrative that the Lakers acted in complete isolation. His name circulated around the league, even if the Lakers ultimately felt most comfortable making the move.
In the end, the pick represented a blend of symbolism, relationship management and low-risk investment. Whether it pays dividends on the court remains to be seen, but the motivation behind the decision now appears clearer.
