‘How can you?’… Talksport pundit bewildered by what he is hearing about £50m Arsenal player now

One of the best players for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal this season has been Ben White, but he has been hitting the headlines for the past two or so days for the wrong reasons.

England head coach Gareth Southgate said on Thursday that Arsenal defender Ben White does not want to play for the Three Lions.

White was part of the England squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals, but the former Leeds United loanee left early.

The £50 million (Sky Sports) defender has not played for England since, and Southgate has revealed that he has been informed that White does not want to turn out for the Three Lions again.

Dean Saunders comments on Arsenal defender Ben White

Dean Saunders cannot believe what White is doing. The former Liverpool and Wales international striker thinks that the Arsenal defender has to take the chance to play for England.

Saunders said about White on talkSPORT (6:27 am, March 15, 2024): “I can’t get my head around it. How can you make yourself unavailable? To be fair to him, he has got four right-backs in front of him – Reece James, Trent, Trippier, Kyle Walker.

“But, one of them could get injured, you wait for your turn, see if you can get in there, and you put yourself in a position where you can’t leave him out. To not play for your country, I can’t get my head around it.”

The talkSPORT pundit added: “Look at Trent. He was not getting picked at right-back, he stayed in the squad, and he ended up playing in the middle of midfield.”

My View: Ben White has to reconsider England stance

In my opinion, Arsenal defender Ben White has to reconsider his stance on playing for England.

White is doing extremely well for Arsenal at the moment. Despite being a centre-back by trade, he is operating as a right-back and is flourishing in that role. He could help the Gunners win the Premier League title this season.

I think that White should take the chance to play for England. Playing for one’s country is an honour.

Yes, White is unlikely to play in each and every game for the Three Lions, but not every footballer gets the chance to even come on as a substitute for England.
