Back in July, Ajax completed the signing of Steven Bergwijn in a £26.4m deal from Tottenham.

The 25-year-old returned to the Netherlands after struggling to impress in north London, scoring just eight goals in 83 appearances for Spurs.

After an initial bright start to life back in Amsterdam – the place of his birth – Bergwijn is now delivering some “erratic” displays, according to analyst Win Kieft.

Bergwijn struggling after leaving Tottenham

Well, the Netherlands international has scored ten goals in 17 appearances already this season, which is quite a good return, in truth.

However, it has not convinced Kieft, who believes Bergwijn has reverted back to the “erratic” forward he was at PSV Eindhoven.

As quoted by Ajax Showtime, the analyst said: “I also have to tell you honestly that Bergwijn, after a pretty good start in the league, is again a bit the erratic player he already was at PSV.”

In our view, that is quite harsh.

Bergwijn has not lived up to the heights he hit at the start of the campaign, although he has only gone two games without a goal in all competitions, so he is far from the biggest problem at Ajax.

Tottenham did well from Bergwijn sale

In our view, Fabio Paratici – Director of Football at Spurs – did very well to receive £26.4m for Bergwijn after his difficult time in England.

Obviously, the Dutchman is a real threat when playing back in the Netherlands, although his form for Spurs certainly didn’t warrant the north Londoners making back almost all of their initial £27m investment in his services.

As aforesaid, Bergwijn only scored eight goals in 83 appearances for Tottenham, so if anything, Paratici actually took Ajax to the cleaners when managing to recoup £26.4m for the winger.

Hopefully, the Ajax No.7 can get back to what he was doing at the start of the season, and make analysts like Kieft eat their words.
