Graeme Murty is already closing in on his second Rangers signing at Ibrox.

Rangers boss Graeme Murty has taken no time in making his presence known in the January transfer market as he closes in on a second winter signing at Ibrox.

The Gers boss has already lured from Manchester United midfielder Sean Goss to Glasgow from QPR on loan, and BBC Sport claim Brighton winger Jamie Murphy has undergone a medical ahead of a proposed move to Murty’s side.

Now, the 43-year-old manager should be on the lookout for more January recruits in order to continually improve his side and a replacement for Lee Hodson should be his next order of business.

The Scottish Sun claim Rangers are willing to swap 26-year-old Hodson for Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones, as the Northern Ireland international remains on the fringes of Murty’s squad.

Without Hodson, James Tavernier has little competition at right-back and an injury to the former Newcastle United defender would leave Rangers exposed on the right side of defence.

That should convince Murty that a new right-back is needed, if Hodson does indeed leave as he seemingly become surplus to requirements, and Newcastle’s Jamie Sterry would be the perfect addition to replace the former MK Dons defender.

The Mirror claims 22-year-old defender Sterry is allowed to leave St. James’ Park on loan this month, but the Gers should look to convince Newcastle to sell the talented right-back permanently.

Sterry will have worked with Tavernier at Newcastle, with the latter leaving the Toon in 2014 and Sterry coming up through the ranks on Tyneside. Reuniting the duo could be crucial in getting the best out of Tavernier.

Likely to cost a minimal amount as he has failed to make a single appearance for Newcastle this season in the Premier League, Murty would be making a smart move by reinstating back-up on the right side of defence if he sells Hodson.
