Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily Podcast, Raphael Honigstein has given a very important update on the future of David Alaba amid links to Liverpool.
The Austrian defender has long-been linked with a move away from Bayern Munich as his contract enters its final six months, and it was thought that he was going to end up at Real Madrid.
However, the German journalist has thrown a spanner into the works, claiming that people close to Alaba have claimed that they’re still negotiating with other clubs.
“Bayern themselves as a club have withdrawn their offer that they had made, and he is effectively a free agent already he can negotiate and see what he can end up with as someone who is not going to cost you a transfer fee, he is 28 and he can play in a variety of positions, he is a top professional,” Raphael Honigstein said.
“There are of course a lot of offers, but in Pini Zahavi he has an agent who is pushing quite hard for wages that even the big Spanish clubs in the current position financially find difficult to swallow.
“The assumption in Germany is that they (Real Madrid) can still find an agreement, that this is all in the latter stages of negotiations and him and Real Madrid have gone significantly far enough to find an agreement, but his people are saying ‘no no this is not done yet and we’re still talking to some other clubs.’ But if you ask me I think it’s still more likely than not that he’ll end up at Real Madrid.”

Fellow journalist Guillem Ballague then offered a further update on the clubs that are in the race for him
“Let me add to that that he’s got the seven biggest clubs in Europe after him, so that would be Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and PSG. Real Madrid don’t have anything finalised with him, the story that came out in the Spanish media included a medical report that Real Madrid had supposedly done with him, that is not the case,” Ballague said.
We know that Liverpool are in the race, after all, Fabrizio Romano has reported that they made a bigger offer than any other club for the Austrian.
This update should inspire a lot of hope within Liverpool fans, this is a race that is seemingly still ongoing, and with Liverpool making him the best offer so far, you have to believe that they’re in with a chance of landing him.
