Glenn Hoddle says Djed Spence hasn’t been given the chance by Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur following their New Year’s Day defeat to Aston Villa.
The 22-year-old came off the bench during the latter stages of Tottenham’s defeat to Villa, with Hoddle unsure whether the right-sided wing-back can do it in north London.
This isn’t Hoddle saying Spence isn’t good enough, but stating that he hasn’t been playing enough for some sort of judgment to be made.
In the summer, Spurs paid Middlesbrough £20 million for Spence (Sky Sports) after he helped Nottingham Forest earn promotion to the Premier League, even back then there were questions if he was Conte’s signing.
Well, after five minutes in the Premier League, across four matches, then it’s pretty obvious what Conte thinks of him.
Either way, Hoddle was suggesting that he would like to see more of the Englishman, as he told Premier League Productions (01/01/23 at 7:25 pm).
“They haven’t all worked out fantastic (Conte’s signings),” said Hoddle. “We haven’t seen Spence. I don’t know if Spence can do it for Tottenham or not yet.
“The question is not a question because we don’t know yet. He’s not been given a chance.”
SPENCE NEEDS A LOAN MOVE
This just hasn’t worked out for Spence, even though the players ahead of him, Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty aren’t pulling up trees.
Will anything change? It doesn’t look like it will, so Spence is better off securing a loan move during the January market because he is affecting his own progression, otherwise.
Whether it’s to another Premier League team or a Championship side trying to earn promotion, he is just rotting away on Tottenham’s bench if he doesn’t move this month.
