Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has told The Mirror that he does not want to sell John McGinn amid reported interest from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

Gerrard, a Liverpool legend, has raved about the Villa midfielder and has outlined what makes him so good.

The former Rangers manager has added that he wants players like McGinn to be at the club so that the Villans can get better.

The Sunday Mirror (13/02, p74) have reported that Liverpool and Manchester United are keen on signing McGinn, with Villa willing to hand the 27-year-old a new contract.

Gerrard said about McGinn: “If we are to take this club where we want to take it, then it’s very important that we keep working with players like him. He’s invaluable.

“When you take over a job, it’s important that your senior players believe in what you’re bringing to the table.

“They help you deliver the message, they help you improve standards around the place. I don’t want to over-praise John here, but he has been absolutely brilliant.”

Could John McGinn leave Aston Villa for Liverpool?

In our view, if Liverpool push hard and make a big offer for McGinn, then a transfer could happen.

Yes, Villa are a big and historic club, but Liverpool are bigger and are a global brand.

Moreover, the Reds regularly compete for the best competitions and biggest trophies.

McGinn is 27 now, and the midfielder is about to hit his peak.

The Scotland international will surely want to be part of a special team and have the best career he possibly can.
