Ally McCoist says Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ‘the absolute shadow of the player’ that was at Arsenal after Graham Potter was sacked at Chelsea.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned to the Premier League in the summer by signing for Arsenal’s rivals Chelsea, who at the time, had Thomas Tuchel in charge.

By the time the 33-year-old could get warm in his seat, Tuchel was booted out of the door in September and replaced by thriving Brighton boss, Graham Potter.

Fast forward to the present and the Englishman’s reign in West London has proven to be a disaster and he has since been sacked – Frank Lampard has come in until the end of the season.

In the meantime, Aubameyang has only mustered 438 minutes of Premier League football, scoring only one goal, even though his team are struggling in the final third.

It’s a clear sign to the Gabon star that things are going very wrong, 12 months after Mikel Arteta booted him out of the Emirates, with former Scotland striker Ally McCoist sharing his thoughts, as he told talkSPORT.

“I think Aubameyang looks as though he is gone,” said McCoist. “I think he looked the absolute shadow of the player, particularly early on at Arsenal.

“I was interested to see how that would work out. Chelsea are still crying out for a centre-forward. They need somebody to put the ball into the back of the net.”

12 MONTHS ON…

This time last season, Arteta was getting a lot of heat thrown his way because Arsenal were fumbling Champions League football.

They were in control, but a number of big games went the other way, including defeats to Tottenham and Newcastle United, to name a few.

One call that Arteta was criticised for was letting a goalscorer go and not replacing him, well, it seems like a genius decision now.
