Granit Xhaka has spoken up about his red card for Arsenal in last weekend’s 5-0 loss against Manchester City.
Speaking to Swiss publication Bluewin, the 28-year-old midfielder defended his tackle which resulted in Xhaka seeing red against City just 35 minutes into the game.
Arsenal went on to lose the game 5-0, their heaviest defeat since Mikel Arteta joined the club in 2019. And the result cemented the Gunners status as the Premier League’s 20th placed side after three games into the season.
It has been a dreadful start to the season for the Gunners. And Xhaka seeing red did little to win supporters over to his side after the midfielder signed a new contract with the club after looking likely to leave.
Xhaka said on his red card: “About the red card: brutally surprising! In connection with the Premier League, people often talk about English toughness.
“I hit the ball 100 per cent and got a red. The pictures were not checked by the VAR. I’ve seen tougher tackles that weren’t even assessed as a foul”

Whilst Xhaka does make a good point that harsher tackles have not warranted red cards, Arsenal fans on social media couldn’t believe the midfielder’s comments on his dismissal against City.
Here’s what some Arsenal fan had to say about Xhaka’s comments on his red card on Twitter…
