PSV Eindhoven coach Roger Schmidt has admitted that Denzel Dumfries has asked to leave amid reported interest from Premier League outfit Everton, in quotes reported by Sempre Inter.

If Marcel Brands could turn back the clock, he would probably have done more to secure Dumfries’ signature before the European Championships kicked off in early-July.

Because after shining on the biggest of stages, capturing the hearts and minds with his swashbuckling, all-action style while leaving poor Clive Tyldsley rather red-faced, the Netherlands international has another offer on the table.

A big one at that.

Inter Milan might be in the midst of a financial nightmare – they are about to sell Romelu Lukaku after losing Achraf Hakimi and talismanic coach Antonio Conte – but the Nerrazzuri are still the Scudetto holders, not to mention a Champions League club.

Is Denzel Dumfries going to snub Everton for Inter Milan?

Everton are still in the race but the Serie A champions are in pole position as things stand, expected to secure Dumfries’ £13 million-rated signature with three weeks of the transfer window remaining (Calciomercato).

Schmidt was reluctant to reveal too much when asked about the right-back’s plans in the aftermath of PSV’s 4-0 thrashing of Ajax this weekend in the Johan Cruyff Shield.

But the head coach did admit that Dumfries, who was nowhere to be seen in the August curtain-raiser, has his bags packed and his passport at the ready.

“Everyone knows he wants to move,” said Schmidt, the former Bayer Leverkusen coach.

“He submitted this request to PSV and we as a club accepted it. This means that for the moment he is not part of the first team.”

Everton have identified a number of alternative right-back options, including 2020 Olympics star Jorge Sanchez and Manchester United bench-warmer Diogo Dalot (The Athletic).

It is understood that the Toffees would not be against the idea of bringing in a proven Premier League performer to compete with Seamus Coleman.
