Cristian Romero will return to Tottenham as a two-time Copa America champion after starring in the final against Colombia.

After a cagey 90 minutes in the final, Argentina broke the deadlock in extra time through Lautaro Martinez to win their 16th Copa America title.

While Martinez and Lionel Messi will hog the headlines, perhaps the most impressive part of Argentina’s success is their defence after conceding just one goal throughout the entire tournament.

Tottenham‘s Cristian Romero has been at the heart of Argentina’s defence, forging a formidable partnership with Manchester United‘s Lisandro Martinez.

Romero played every minute in the tournament for Argentina apart from the dead-rubber group stage match against Peru and he received some high praise from his nation’s media for his performance in the final.

Argentine media react to Cristian Romero at Copa America

Colombia scored a staggering 12 goals on their route to the Copa America final but their star-studded attack found themselves halted by Romero and Co.

Argentine outlet TyC Sports was full of praise for Romero’s performance, describing him as the best player in the tournament.

“There is no better central defender in the world,” they wrote. “He risks his life in every cross. He commands respect and admiration. The best player of the match and of the tournament.”

Ange Postecoglou must have stars in his eyes after watching Romero at Copa America – he was not only one of Argentina’s best players but one of the best in the entire tournament.

While still prone to a rash decision or a forceful challenge, he hardly put a foot wrong for his nation.
