Brian Windhorst has raised a pointed concern over Victor Wembanyama after San Antonio’s NBA Finals opener.
The timing matters because the Spurs lost Game 1 to the New York Knicks 105-95, leaving San Antonio with an immediate response to find.
Wembanyama still produced, as he finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, but his impact was not as clean as the headline numbers suggest.
Brian Windhorst raises Victor Wembanyama energy concern

“I felt Victor Wembanyama was low on energy from the first quarter,” Windhorst said.
That observation is worth noting because it was not framed around late-game fatigue. The issue, in Windhorst’s view, was visible from the opening quarter.
That distinction matters. A superstar can have tired legs in the fourth quarter, especially after a demanding playoff run, but looking short of energy early is a different discussion.
The box score supports a more complicated reading of Wembanyama’s night. He shot 6-of-21 from the field and 2-of-9 from three, which left San Antonio needing more efficiency from its best player.
Spurs need Wembanyama at full force against Knicks
The Spurs do not need to turn one comment into a crisis. They do, however, need to treat it as a practical Finals problem.
Wembanyama entered this stage after a heavy Western Conference Finals workload, having averaged 37.7 minutes during that series.
The physical context is relevant even without turning it into an excuse. San Antonio need his usual presence, not just his counting numbers.
The Spurs can survive one inefficient shooting night from Wembanyama. They cannot afford his energy level to become a recurring theme if this Finals matchup tightens further.
