Darren Bent thinks Cristian Romero looks ‘calmer’ under the stewardship of new Tottenham Hotspur boss, Ange Postecoglou.

It’s only a small sample of games, but there seems to be a change of character from the hard-hitting Tottenham centre-back.

For Bent, he thinks that last season, Cristian Romero was ‘on the border of getting sent off’, as he told Premier League Productions (21/08/23 at 2:30 pm).

Sometimes that side of the 25-year-old’s game makes him great and watchable for fans, even if he gets them on the edge of their seats.

You don’t want to take that raw aggression and passion out of his game, but equally, he does need to balance it out.

Either way, Bent spotted a change in the World Cup-winning star, as life under Postecoglou starts with four points from two games, including a win over Manchester United.

“Romero, again, it’s only two games in, but he looks calmer,” said Bent. “There were times last season where he was on the border of getting sent off.”

Romero is Tottenham’s main man at the back

Postecoglou has made his feelings towards Eric Dier clear, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he heads for the exit door this summer.

But that makes someone like Romero the main guy at the back, with January signing Pedro Porro at fullback, summer signing Micky van de Ven beside him, rising star Destiny Udogie on the left and a new face in between the sticks in Guglielmo Vicario.

It does also help that Spurs are now a possession-based team because most of Romero’s aggression and on-the-edge nature comes when his team are without the ball.
