Craig Burley says Eric Dier ‘isn’t quick enough’ to play in Ange Postecoglou’s new attack-minded system at Tottenham Hotspur.
During Tottenham’s opening two Premier League game weeks, Eric Dier hasn’t even been part of the club’s matchday squads, as they have picked up four points, including a 2-0 win over Manchester United.
That’s a sign from Ange Postecoglou that the 29-year-old isn’t wanted, as Burley added that it’s time Tottenham ‘got some of the old guard out’, as he told ESPN.
Dier certainly falls into that bracket because he is now one of the club’s longest-serving players after joining the club in 2014 when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge – Jamie O’Hara recently claimed that Dier is ‘upset’ and not becoming club captain.
Things went pretty well for the versatile defender early doors, including helping Spurs into the Champions League on many occasions and earning England caps.
But ever since Pochettino was sacked, Dier has declined as a player and doesn’t deserve to be earning those starting minutes based on recent performances, with Burley sharing his thoughts.

“I think it’s just about progression for them,” said Burley. “January transfer window, make sure they back the manager. Continue with the good football.
“Getting some of the old guard out like Eric Dier, who hasn’t featured and he just isn’t quick enough to play in a system that requires your back four, especially your two centre-backs, to be able to run. They are getting left man-for-man.
“I do think if he gets into a European place and they continue to play some good football, then it would be a good season and an amazing one if he gets them into the top four.”

Dier should leave this summer
It’s the Harry Maguire situation at Old Trafford, it’s just best for all parties if the player in question heads for the exit door.
If that happens, Spurs could get a fee for their player, get the £85k-a-week star (Spotrac) off the wage bill, and then be able to sign someone else for the manager to work with to better the team as a whole.
There is interest in Dier ahead of the 2023 summer transfer window slamming shut, with suggestions that Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace are keen.
