Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on Liverpool’s decision to bring Michael Edwards back to Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. This is the German boss’s final campaign in charge of the Reds.
Michael Edwards is on his way back to Anfield. HITC revealed on Saturday that despite rejecting a return to Liverpool in January, Edwards has now decided to come back to the Merseyside club in a senior role.
Edwards was previously a Sporting Director at Liverpool, and now his new role at the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners would see him have an overarching role at Anfield with some describing it as a ‘President of Football’-type scenario.
HITC also understands that Richard Hughes will become the new Sporting Director of Liverpool.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), will announce the arrival of Edwards in the coming weeks, and former Anfield star Jamie Carragher has a theory why it is happening now.
Jamie Carragher comments on Michael Edwards returning to Liverpool
Carragher said about Edwards on Sky Sports Premier League (12:13 pm, March 10, 2024): “Well, he knows the club really well. He is one of the top operators in European football at his job.
“There is no doubt there was a falling out or Jurgen Klopp just became more powerful and had a bigger say on things, as you would expect, whether that was Sir Alex Ferguson in the past, Wenger, Jurgen Klopp now, Pep Guardiola, these managers, the more successful they are, the more power they have.
“They wanted to bring him back, as I said, but the reason why I say it was overstated slightly, is the fact that I always think the manager at this club is the most important person and will always be.
“The success Liverpool have had over the years under Jurgen Klopp, for me, is primarily down to Jurgen Klopp. He has had a lot of help, and Michael Edwards has been a part of that.”
My View: Liverpool fans should be positive
In my opinion, Liverpool fans should be optimistic about the future under Michael Edwards.
Yes, it is going to be hard for Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp, but the Anfield faithful should be confident that the club will do everything they can to bring in a suitable replacement.
Klopp has won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in recent years with Liverpool. He could lead the Reds to another league triumph this season.
Edwards knows Liverpool inside out and is a big reason why the Reds have been successful in recent years.
In my opinion, FSG should be praised for bringing Edwards back to Anfield.
