HITC understands that Liverpool are confident that former sporting director Michael Edwards is set to agree a return to the club.

HITC revealed in January that Michael Edwards rejected an initial approach in January, as the club looked for a new sporting director and manager with Jurgen Klopp stepping down in the summer.

Michael Edwards set to return to Liverpool

Now, sources have confirmed to HITC that the club’s owners FSG have held fresh talks with Edwards in the last few weeks, and he is understood to be open to the idea of taking charge.

FSG have offered Edwards and new role that would see him have an overarching role at Anfield with some describing it as a ‘President of Football’-type scenario.

Edwards would be allowed to run the football operation from top to bottom and that would see him bring in his own sporting director and head of recruitment.

The highly-rated official would also have the final say on the new boss, but it is believed that he also thinks that Xabi Alonso, Liverpool’s top choice, is the right man for the job.

FSG hope to make progress this month to be able to confirm Edwards by Easter.

Edwards was on Manchester United’s list to come into their new-look footballing department, while Newcastle United were also looking at him as a potential replacement for Dan Ashworth.

HITC also understands that Richard Hughes is expected to be part of Edwards’s staff and is in line for the sporting director’s role at Anfield. He has offers from Italy, but he is ready to move to the Merseyside club.

Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup this season, and manager Jurgen Klopp will be determined to lead the team to three more trophies this season before he leaves.

The Reds are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment, are very likely to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, and are still in the FA Cup.
