Alan Shearer was seemingly left annoyed on Twitter by Newcastle United’s latest performance after they fell to a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea.
This was a huge game in the push for Europe because Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea were four points behind their Monday night opponents.
But Cole Palmer, who has been one of the Premier League’s best players this season, ensured his team were still alive in that race by assisting and scoring in front of a jubilant Stamford Bridge crowd.
Even though Alan Shearer labelled the London club as ‘average’, he made it clear that their star summer signing was Man of the Match ‘by a mile’, as he posted on Twitter.
It was the former Manchester City man’s tame shot that was cleverly flicked on by Nicolas Jackson to open the scoring after six minutes, before he put his team back into the lead in the second half with a brilliant near-post finish from the edge-of-the-box.
This was Cole Palmer at his very best, with Newcastle’s backline unable to handle his trickery and movement in the final third.
From the 21-year-old’s 24 matches this term, he has 11 goals and eight assists to his name, as he is well on course to hitting double digits in both categories.
Alan Shearer’s praise for Cole Palmer
“He’s some player Cole Palmer, man, superb,” said Shearer.
“Chelsea, who are average at best, deserved to win tonight. Palmer MOTM by a mile.”
Cole Palmer saving Chelsea’s season
Where would Chelsea be without Palmer? The answer is lower than 11th and probably heading towards a trophyless campaign.
Yes, Pochettino watched his team suffer extra-time heartache to Liverpool in the League Cup final.
But his young and ever-improving team still have a chance of lifting the FA Cup, and that’s largely thanks to Palmer.
Whether he is on the left flank, in the pockets as a ten or playing as a false nine, he is causing many, many teams issues this season.
But Chelsea’s biggest game of the season, so far, awaits them on Sunday when they face Championship high-flyers Leicester City for a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
