Despite the fierce rivalry, one former Rangers player could not resist praising Celtic for their latest piece of transfer business.

As is the nature of the Scottish Premiership, the two Glasgow giants will go head-to-head for the title once again next season.

But in the meantime, both Rangers and Celtic are busy working on improving their squads during this summer’s transfer window.

Celtic were the latest of the two teams to dip into the market to sign goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel on a free transfer.

Schmeichel was not the club’s first-choice target this summer but they have now finalised a deal for the 37-year-old, who has been brought in to replace Joe Hart following his retirement.

The details of Schmeichel’s Celtic contract have been revealed and while he is no long-term solution for Celtic, his leadership and experience could prove vital in the title race.

Ex-Rangers man praises Celtic deal for Kasper Schmeichel

It is not often you will hear a former player of either side speak kindly towards their old rivals, but ex-Rangers goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen couldn’t help but to praise Schmeichel’s move.

Via Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Christiansen said “It is fantastic for Kasper and for Danish football. It also shows that he still has ambitions and that he means it when he says that he is not ready to stop yet.

“He comes to a club which basically wins the championship every year and which plays in the Champions League every year.

“They play to huge crowds every time. The league is of course less good, but at the same time he is in a big club that wins everything and that comes out and plays in the Champions League. “

Kasper Schmeichel at Celtic next season

Schmeichel will likely not be at Celtic for a long time but he is still at a good enough level to help their title defence.

Despite his age, he is still the starting goalkeeper for Denmark and he certainly didn’t look out of place at Euro 2024 this summer.

On a free transfer, it could turn out to be a fantastic piece of business by Celtic – but it still doesn’t solve their long-term goalkeeper solution.
