Ex-Tottenham defender Serge Aurier is reportedly close to signing for La Liga side Villarreal.

According to L’Equipe, the 28-year-old right-back is on the verge of reuniting with former PSG manager Unai Emery in Spain. Aurier was let go by Spurs in the summer and has been a free agent ever since.

The defender has been linked to a handful of sides. However, it now appears that Aurier will be heading to Villarreal. The Spanish side are currently competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Indeed, it is a surprising move for Aurier. The Ivorian international struggled for regular first-team minutes under Jose Mourinho and Ryan Mason last season. Now, the defender is heading to one of Europe’s top sides.

A case could be made that the £23m signing has actually upgraded from Spurs. After all, Tottenham have not competed in the Champions League in two seasons, whilst Villarreal last year won the UEFA Europa League.

And as you would expect, Spurs fans on social media can’t believe how Aurier has managed to secure a move to Villarreal. It is unlikely the defender will break into the XI soon.
