Premier League pair Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have both been linked with Trabzonspor’s Turkey goalkeeper.

Thursday afternoon offered a rare moment of positivity in a miserable season of Newcastle United.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has committed his future to Steve Bruce’s side for the next six years, with the ink drying on a shiny new contract. The Slovakian international has been far from his best this season with big errors against Liverpool and Leicester still fresh in the memory but he is still one of the first names on Newcastle’s team-sheet.

And the prospect of losing him in January, amid reported interest from Juventus, was the last thing the Magpies needed with another relegation battle looming ominously on the horizon.

While so much about Newcastle remains uncertain, from their manager and their owner to even their division, at least the goalkeeping situation appears to have been settled for years to come. In Freddie Woodman, the youngster shining at Swansea, Bruce has a brilliant young shot-stopper capable of stepping up and competing with Dubravka very soon.

Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are still at St James’ Park too.

So it seems very unlikely now that Turkish international Ugurcan Cakir will be heading to Tyneside any time soon with the Northern Echo claiming that Newcastle were eyeing a potential £17 million deal.

And Dubravka’s decision to stay put might just encourage Wolverhampton Wanderers to act fast.

Ajansspor claims that Wolves too have been keeping a close eye on Cakir and, unlike Newcastle, their options between the sticks are hardly set in stone. John Ruddy is the only real senior option behind Rui Patricio and he is out of contract at the end of the season.

Youngster Andreas Sondergaard is very highly rated at Molineux but he’s just 18 and it’s far too soon to promote him to second choice.

Don’t be surprised then if Cakir becomes Wolves’ top target very soon with Newcastle seemingly bowing out of the race.
