Newcastle United reportedly want to bring Trabzonspor goalkeeper Cakir to the Premier League – could he replace Martin Dubravka in Steve Bruce’s XI?

Newcastle United will have to pay around £17 million for Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, according to the Northern Echo, with the highly-rated Turkish international exactly the kind of player The Magpies are looking to bring in.

Ever since Mike Ashley completed his takeover of the Tyneside giants around a decade ago, Newcastle have been fully focused on signing young, promising players with a substantial re-sale value such as Ayoze Perez, Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamaal Lascelles.

And, according to The Echo, Cakir fits the bill perfectly with Steve Bruce’s side keeping a close eye on one of the most promising shot-stoppers in Europe right now.

At the age of 23, Cakir is the undisputed number one at Trabzonspor, conceding just nine goals in seven Super Lig games so far this season. He also made his debut for the Turkish national team back in May during a friendly against Greece.

The report adds that the 6ft 3ins glovesman will cost a hefty £17 million, which would make him their third most expensive signing ever after Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

Interest in Cakir will certainly raise doubts about the future of Martin Dubravka, who has been in talks over a new contract but has been subjected to plenty of criticism too in the wake of big errors against Liverpool and Leicester City.
