Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is welcoming the prospect of the ‘lightning quick’ Timo Werner returning to the Premier League on an initial loan deal from RB Leipzig.
Isn’t it funny how quickly Tottenham can tie up a transfer when there isn’t a transfer fee involved?
Spurs, by Daniel Levy’s usual snail-pace standards, breezed through discussions to bring former Chelsea frontman Timo Werner back to England. The London giants are set to sign the Germany international on an initial loan deal.
And, while there will be a £15.5 million option-to-buy clause included in his contract, Redknapp believes Werner is a low-cost, potentially high-reward addition which just makes sense, albeit only on a short-term basis (Sky Sports).

Tottenham to sign former Chelsea man Timo Werner
“I think he’s worth a gamble. It’s only a loan, they are not committed to a two or three-year deal,” Redknapp, who took Tottenham into the Champions League for the first time back in 2010, tells talkSPORT (9 January, 8am).
“They are short of options up front, Tottenham. Son is away now (at the Asian Cup) and, if they get an injury, they are struggling to find someone.
“On a loan, I think he’s worth a gamble. Long-term, if you said sign him now for two or three years, I wouldn’t be doing it.
“(But) he could come in and score six, seven or eight goals for you which make the difference. So I think he is a decent loan signing.”
Werner scored only 10 Premier League goals in two seasons at Chelsea and has struggled for opportunities since returning to Leipzig in 2022. But Ange Postecoglou’s high-pressing, high-octane approach could be the key to unlocking the striker’s undoubted potential, especially with Werner perfectly-suited to the inverted left-wing role Son is set to vacate over the coming weeks.
Spurs also want Radu Dragusin from Genoa
“Why would Leipzig want to loan him out? They can’t be that mad about him. But, when you’re short, it’s a gamble,” Redknapp adds. “On a loan, you’re not breaking the bank so he’s well worth taking a chance with until the end of the season.
“His movement is good, he’s lightning quick. He has to hold his runs better, he runs offside too much, and his finishing could be better.
“Having said all that, well worth a short-term gamble.”
Tottenham are also looking to bring in Radu Dragusin from Genoa this month. HITC Football understands that Spurs are offering Djed Spence as a makeweight in a deal for the £30 million-rated Romanian defender.
