According to Christopher Michel, the 2019 Champions League final is still affecting Heung-min Son at Tottenham.
Son could leave Tottenham
Well, the Sport1 journalist sat down with Bernabeu Digital to speak about the South Korea international, who he claims is thinking about leaving Spurs in search of silverware.
Michel believes Son is keen to win trophies before he retires, with Real Madrid a potential destination, and the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in 2019 is still on his mind.
Speaking to Bernabeu Digital, the journalist said: “Son is relatively old, he has not yet dared to make the jump to a very big European club. Maybe that is why he is thinking about it so much now.
“This season it seems that he will not be able to get the Premier League either. The 2019 Champions League final loss against Liverpool also had a lasting effect. Son doesn’t want to end his career without a title. A club like Real would almost guarantee it for him.”
The Spanish giants pinched Luka Modric, then Gareth Bale, and they could now be about to make it a hat-trick of poaching Tottenham’s best players.
Son could be disillusioned at Tottenham
Michel’s claim must be taken with a pinch of salt, as all sorts of rumours fly around in the football world on a daily basis.
However, if he is telling the truth, then it would explain why Son has not looked himself this season.
After scoring 23 Premier League goals last term to win the Golden Boot, the 30-year-old has only scored three goals in 12 Premier League outings in the current campaign, with all of them coming in the 6-2 win over Leicester.
The £60m arrival of Richarlison could also have something to do with it, although Son definitely isn’t himself.
If the Tottenham No.7 is keen to leave north London, it will be interesting to see how it plays out with Daniel Levy, who worked hard to keep Harry Kane in N17 after he expressed a desire to leave in 2021.
Only time will tell what happens, but with Son contracted to Tottenham until the summer of 2025, Levy holds plenty of power.
