Steve Nicol has admitted that he would have liked to have seen Liverpool sign Yves Bissouma, prior to him swapping Brighton for Tottenham colours this summer, as he told ESPN.

Tottenham paid a rumoured £25 million for the Mali international, who had one-year left on his contract at the Amex Stadium – even Paul Merson felt that Liverpool missed a trick with Bissouma’s transfer.

Nonetheless, what is Liverpool’s potential loss is Tottenham’s gain, with Bissouma seen as one of the best defensive midfielders in the country during the past few seasons.

The Reds have added to their midfield this season by signing the attack-minded, Fabio Carvalho, after he helped Fulham earn promotion to the Premier League.

But there are some who think Jurgen Klopp should add another defensive-minded midfielder to his ranks, as Nicol dropped Bissouma’s name into the hat.

“Bissouma is a good signing,” said Nicol. “I liked him at Brighton, so they (Spurs) have strengthened in the middle of the park.

“Before the end of the season, I had Kalvin Phillips and maybe Bissouma. After that, there aren’t that many available. As I said, they (Liverpool) still have numbers and they still have quality.

“I am just trying to be greedy. I am just trying to get better. But I am sure Klopp has got it well in hand.”

BISSOUMA IS ONE OF THE SIGNINGS OF THE SUMMER

When the dust has settled for the 2022 summer transfer window, Bissouma will prove to be one of the signings of the summer, especially for the fee Spurs have paid.

There’s no doubt that he enhances Antonio Conte’s midfield and he could even argue that he now pushes ahead of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a starter.

Manchester City just added Kalvin Phillips to their books and the argument could be made that Bissouma is better than the England international.

Those from the Etihad paid £42 million for Phillips (Sky Sports), so from that perspective, Spurs probably got the better deal.

Either way, the summer transfer window is still open and a move of any sorts shouldn’t be ruled out by Liverpool, but they aren’t the type of club to do any late shopping, so when it comes to incomings, they are probably done.
