Darren Ambrose says Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips would be a ‘great fit’ for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Liverpool missed out on a number of big-name midfielders this summer, with two of them heading to Chelsea.

That has seen the Reds change tact, including bringing in Wataru Endo from Germany and now there is talk of Kalvin Phillips.

Ambrose thinks that the England international, who has struggled since moving to Manchester City last summer, would suit Liverpool’s ‘defensive midfield’, as he told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports (21/08/23 at 7:25 pm).

Even though Man City won the Treble last season, Phillips only played 490 minutes in those competitions and he is yet to feature this season.

So, it’s understandable that his future has been spoken about, with Ambrose talking about a possible move to Anfield.

“You would say no, they have a lot of players in midfield,” said Ambrose. “But they missed out on Lavia, so they are obviously looking out for players in that position.

“They have been linked with Kalvin Phillips. We have seen that. They are clearly looking for more bodies in that centre midfield.

“I think so (Phillips would be a good move). He had his issues, injury-wise, the last couple of seasons.

“But you look at the player he has been, particularly in the Euros for England and then when he was at Leeds. He is a fabulous midfielder and I think, if he can stay fit and you can get the Kalvin Philips that can play every match, then he would be a great fit into that defensive midfield for Liverpool.”

Phillips hurting his own progression

It’s understandable if a player wants to stay at Man City because you win trophies galore and you are getting coached by one of the greatest.

But Phillips is hardly getting onto the pitch and it is hurting his progression, it won’t be too long before he is hardly getting picked for England.

There is talk that Liverpool are looking to sign him, and if they come knocking, then he has to consider a move, or else, keep warming the bench at the Etihad.
