Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy says he would not be disappointed if Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips joined his old side this summer.

According to talkSPORT, Liverpool are considering making a bid for Kalvin Phillips. The Reds recently completed the signing of Wataru Endo from Stuttgart, but it looks like Jurgen Klopp is still not completely satisfied with his options in the engine room.

Speaking on talkSPORT about the Reds’ interest in the 27-year-old, Murphy said: “I like him. I think he’s a talent. He needs to start playing.

“I wouldn’t be that disappointed if Liverpool got him. I think he’s a talent and he’d be great cover or even make that position his own because they’ve only got Endo really who can play that position.”

City signed Phillips from Leeds United last summer in a deal worth £45m, but he made just 12 appearances in the Premier League.

Kalvin Phillips could be a smart signing for Liverpool

It is easy to forget just how good Phillips actually is. If Klopp is looking for another holding midfielder, then bringing the England international to Anfield could be quite a logical move.

Things have obviously not worked out for him at City. But during his time at Leeds, he was so effective in the position just in front of the defence.

In his final season at the Whites, Phillips made 2.7 tackles per game in the Premier League, which was the joint second-highest average in his squad (WhoScored).

He is not only good at winning the ball back, though. The Three Lions star is also a great passer, with his national team and club team-mate John Stones describing his passing as “outrageous”.

All in all, it is a move that could work out for both parties here. Liverpool could still probably do with another defensive midfielder, while Phillips needs game time, especially with Euro 2024 coming up.
