Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers won 5-3 on Sunday, but Graeme Murty suggests he wasn’t completely happy with one man.
Speaking to Rangers’ official website, Graeme Murty has claimed that January signing Greg Docherty not only needs to understand his midfield role better, but also “needs to be cleaner with the ball”.
Docherty, a £675,000 signing last month, posted what looked to be a mixed performance in Sunday’s 5-3 win at Hamilton for what was his first game against his old club.
The 21-year-old midfielder was partially to blame for the first goal that Rangers conceded and seemed to take a while before he grew into the match.
Afterwards, fans of the Ibrox club on Twitter raved about the Scot’s performance, but Murty intimates that he wasn’t completely happy with him.
“I thought in the first half, Greg Docherty tried too hard – he tried to be everywhere and tried to cover every blade of artificial grass and tried to do everything,” he told Rangers’ official website.
“That’s kind of what he would do for Hamilton – but for us he needs to be more structured, and he needs to have more of an understanding of his role within the team.
“But also, he needs to be cleaner with the ball. I thought when he came onto the game, rather than chasing it all over the place, he was much more disciplined, had a much better structure and it allowed him to use his attributes a little bit more.
“We just need to tidy him up – we need to tidy him up and get him to lose that performance anxiety he has at the moment playing for Rangers and playing for a big club and trying to be perfect every time.”
On a day when Josh Windass scored a hat-trick, Jamie Murphy bagged three assists, it would have been difficult for Docherty to endear himself to Murty in the same way, given his position, but there were enough signs that the youngster can be a huge player for the Glasgow giants in the future.
