Paul Merson believes Christian Pulisic could be available for just £30m this summer as Newcastle express an interest in the American.
What’s the story?
Well – according to the Mirror – Newcastle wanted to sign the Chelsea No.10 in January.
The Telegraph add that Eddie Howe also showed an interest in Pulisic back in August.
By the sounds of it, Newcastle are huge admirers of the United States international, and Merson believes Chelsea could now be forced to cash in on their £58m signing for just £30m given their financial issues.
The 55-year-old said: “You can’t have 30 players there, even if you have 11 v 11 you’ll have eight players sitting out. It’s impossible. We’re talking about international footballers. If I want to buy Pulisic, I’ll ring up and they’ll go £50m.
“I’ll go, well I’ll give you £30m, because you’ve got to get rid of him. You can’t keep all these players for another year.”
According to The Athletic, Chelsea must sell some players before June 30th in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations after spending £600m in the last two windows, so Merson’s hypothetical scenario is likely to become reality.
The Blues are set to have little power at the negotiating table this summer, as anyone interested in signing their players will be aware that they need to sell, and fast.
With just eight Premier League starts to his name this season, Pulisic is looking likely to be one of those who Chelsea will put up for sale.
Newcastle should push hard to sign Pulisic
In our view, Pulisic should be a leading target for Howe this summer.

Newcastle could certainly do with an upgrade on Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy in the wide attacking areas.
Furthermore – from a marketing aspect – signing the captain of the United States wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially seeing as Newcastle don’t have a single American player.
Pulisic was one of the most exciting talents on the planet during his time at Borussia Dortmund, and his quiet period at the chaotic Stamford Bridge – where many attackers are struggling – should not define him.
