It was made very clear to Sam Burns and a number of other players during the final round of the US Open that Wyndham Clark was not who the crowd wanted to see emerge victorious at Shinnecock Hills.

Clark seemed to go into the final round of the US Open with one hand on the trophy already. The 32-year-old had built up a six-shot lead over the first three days in New York.

The chasing pack were always going to require help from Clark if they were going to stand any chance of snatching the US Open trophy from his grasp.

And it seems that the crowds were determined to make Clark as uncomfortable as possible.

What fans were shouting about Wyndham Clark during the final round of the US Open

It was Sam Burns who made the strongest charge early on in the final round. In fact, as Clark left the fifth hole after a nightmare start to his day, he found himself just one shot clear of his countryman.

And that would have pleased a number of people behind the ropes in Southampton.

As reported by Joseph LaMagna on X, there was just one player that many of the spectators did not want to see get the victory.

He posted: ‘“Anyone but Wyndham” has been the motto from fans at Shinnecock today. A fan just yelled it at Sam Burns after he birdied No. 5, and I’ve heard it at least five times from fans in the last 15 minutes.’

What spectators said to Wyndham Clark on the first tee

Clark was clearly well aware of the animosity towards him. He has spoken of his desire to win people back over after some of his past mistakes.

Clark also noted how difficult it was finishing his round on Saturday with many of the spectators already leaving the property.

They were certainly loud on the first tee on Sunday, with Jamie Kennedy also noting on X that some were not too complimentary about his opening shot.

He wrote: ‘Two very different receptions on the first tee. Crowd sings Happy Birthday to Scottie. Wyndham hits his first shot and I heard yells of “crash and burn Wyndham” and “get in the bunker”. And we’re off.

While some of the shouts definitely crossed a line, there is no question that Clark’s start to the day created the drama that the final round of the tournament was crying out for.
