Connor Goldson claims everyone he has spoken to feels Rangers talent Nathan Patterson has great skill and wants the defender to stay at Ibrox for a long time, via the Daily Record.

Goldson considers Patterson the future of the Gers at right-back, as he has great offensive and defensive qualities. Steven Gerrard could field the 20-year-old against Brondby in the Europa League on Thursday, for what would be only his fifth appearance so far this season.

Gerrard has kept Patterson to a back-up role behind Rangers captain James Tavernier over the opening months of the term. The Gers product has only played once in the Premiership so far, while featuring once in Europe in August’s qualifiers and twice in the League Cup.

Patterson’s appearance against Hibernian prior to the last international break also returned his first assist of the season. Floating a cross into the Hibs box for Kemar Roofe to draw the game level, before Alfredo Morelos’ 78th-minute winner.

Goldson wants Patterson to stick around for a long time

But Patterson had already earned admirers outside of Ibrox after his Rangers breakthrough last season. Everton courted the five-cap Scotland international this summer, however The Scottish Sun claim they now want Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay as a cheaper option.

Goldson, seemingly, hopes Patterson ignores any transfer interest to remain at Rangers for a long time. Backing the defender to be the Gers’ future, with support from all corners.

“Advice-wise, there is not much I can give him. It’s his own unique situation,” Goldson said. “It’s credit to himself and all the hard work he has put in over the years. All I can say for this football club is that Nathan is the future of it.

“He’s an amazing player. Everyone I’ve spoken to about him speaks really highly. On and off the pitch, he wants to learn. I’ve really enjoyed playing next to him when he’s played.

“He’s a young boy, full of energy, but at the same time he’s got amazing qualities going forward and defending. He’s the future of this club and he’s a player that I hope Rangers keep for a long time.”

Gerrard may have to show Patterson he can be Rangers’ future by awarding him greater opportunities to demonstrate Goldson’s praise. Suitors are on alert to his rise at Ibrox and on the international stage, and could present more regular roles.
