Kristoffer Ajer admits that he will ‘probably’ leave Celtic during the summer transfer window with Premier League duo Norwich City and Newcastle United keen, speaking to the Daily Record.
If Hoops fans thought the nightmare was over when a desolate 2020/21 campaign came to an end, think again.
With the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Norway international Ajer entering the final few months of their contract, a Celtic side who finished 25 points behind Old Firm rivals Rangers in the final standings may be about to lose three of their most important players on the cheap.
The Sun believes that Ajer could go for a cut-price fee of £10 million with Newcastle and Norwich competing to take the 6ft 6ins giant south of the border.
And, speaking after Norway’s 1-0 victory over Luxembourg in midweek, the three-time Premiership champion certainly didn’t sound like a man ready to put pen to paper on a new deal and bring an end to all the speculation.
Far from it.
“With one year left of my contract, (leaving Celtic) would be the best solution for me and my club. Something is going to happen this summer,” Ajer admits.
“There are of course many rumours. Right now, it’s just rumours.
“For both me and Celtic to get the best possible starting point, it probably makes sense that (a sale) happens this year.”
Former Norway ace Vidar Riseth is convinced that Newcastle will be Ajer’s eventual destination, with Magpies manager Steve Bruce on the lookout for a commanding central defender to replace the departing Federico Fernandez.
