Arsenal were once linked with Andre Onana, and the Gunners fans will find it interesting to note that the Cameroon international goalkeeper, who turned down a move to the Emirates Stadium, has decided to leave the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

With immediate effect.

Arsenal’s previous interest in Cameroon’s Andre Onana

Arsenal now have one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale is perfect for the way Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta plays his football.

However, even after the Gunners signed the England international from Sheffield United, they were still chasing Andre Onana.

Back in November 2021, Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Arsenal were interested in signing the Cameroonian star.

However, as covered here on HITC Sport, the 26-year-old said no to Arsenal and turned them down.

Onana eventually signed a contract with former Serie A and UEFA Champions League winners Inter Milan.

The former Ajax star was included in the Cameroon squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

2022 Qatar World Cup controversy

However, as well-known and well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter, the goalkeeper has left the Cameroon camp and will not be back for the rest of the World Cup.

Romano has claimed that Onana took the controversial decision because of disagreement with Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song’s playing style.

Song wants his goalkeeper to be more traditional between the posts, but Onana wants to maintain his style of playing out from the back.
