Andy Cole has urged Newcastle to ‘go for it’ and sign James Tarkowski from Burnley, as he told Premier League Productions (06/01/22 at 10:55 am).

The former striker thinks, for Tarkowski, it’s ‘not really a gamble’ moving to Newcastle because Burnley are in the ‘exact same position’ as their relegation rivals.

Both Burnley and Newcastle have won one game this season and they are both desperate to get out of the relegation zone.

With the Magpies adding Kieran Trippier to their ranks on Friday morning, and more is probably to come, they will feel they have more of a chance of getting out of their current mess.

After previously speaking about Trippier, ex-Newcastle man Cole shared there is no reason why they can’t sign Tarkowski.

“In his (Tarkowski) case, if the Newcastle deal comes up, then why not?” said Cole.

“Financially, they are in a better position than Burnley. If they stay up, he knows they are going to buy better players come next season.

“So, for him, it’s not really a gamble because Burnley are in the exact same position. Looking at Burnley’s form, they look like they are going to go down.

“Newcastle or Burnley? I am looking at it and saying ‘go for it’.”

The key thing with Tarkowski is that Burnley, and especially Sean Dyche, wouldn’t want to lose such a key player and that to a rival.

But Tarkowski has six months remaining on his contract, so do those from Turf Moor cash in on the two-capped England man?

Added with that, the question needs to be asked whether Tarkowski is the type of player to move from one sinking ship to the other.

And then help his new side stay afloat, whilst those who he left end up in England’s second tier.
