Mikel Arteta has swerved a question about Arsenal signing Jack Wilshere, but did admit that he was doing brilliant on the training ground.

Wilshere is a free agent and has been training alongside Arsenal players under Arteta in recent months.

The 29-year-old only returned to London Colney for the purpose of staying fit but it seems like he is making an impact.

Bradley Ibrahim, an academy player, said he was more impressed by the English midfielder and Ben White more than anyone else at the training base.

Asked by Football London whether Arteta could sign Wilshere, the Spaniard didn’t directly answer but did praise him nonetheless.

He said: “I think it’s a great compliment for Jack that the players that are playing alongside him think that way of him.

“To be fair, he’s doing really well, he’s getting better and better and we know the qualities that Jack has.”

Could it happen?

Well, it seemed ridiculous at the start, considering Wilshere was last on the books at Bournemouth.

But if he’s impressing Arteta then who knows?

After all, Granit Xhaka is still four weeks away from being fully fit and Thomas Partey is away to the Africa Cup of Nations next month – and he’s injury prone.

And with Mohamed Elneny likely to be off in January, and Albert Sambi Lokonga still very rough around the edges, how good is Arsenal’s midfield really?

Stranger things have definitely happened in football than the Gunners re-signing Wilshere.
