Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has insisted his side’s record in cup competitions isn’t good enough after they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by St. Johnstone on penalties.
With the Light Blues having secured the league already, Gerrard wants a “group capable of being better” as he criticised the record of one piece of domestic silverware from nine in his time in Scotland.
The league win and elimination from the Europa League saw Gerrard’s side focus on winning the Scottish Cup for the first time in more than a decade and the Ibrox boss wasn’t happy to see that ended at the quarter-final stage again,
“We won’t shy away from the importance of the game,” Gerrard said speaking to Radio Clyde.
“It became a priority once the leage was done and we were out of Europe so we’ll take responsibility for that.
“The reality is, we need to be better in cup competitions. We’re getting to this stage too many times and getting stung. In the final moments of the game four days ago, we haven’t managed it well enough as a team and we paid for that and two points were taken away.
“That’s the challenge for to improve in cup competitions and get a group that’s capable of being better and giving out fans what they deserve, which is more trophies. One out of nine isn’t good enough.”
