German soccer fan left confused by MLB rescheduling as Americans offer explanation

The 2026 World Cup may have come to a close, but soccer fans from around Europe have decided to stick around in America.

English soccer fan Oliver Henry became popular on social media throughout the tournament after meeting Donald Trump, and he is currently still travelling around the USA.

Elsewhere, Germany supporter Fiago has also yet to return home, and recently attended the MLB match between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

However, he was confused as to why there ended up being two games taking place on the same day.

On July 21, the match between the Yankees and the Pirates was rescheduled due to the weather conditions.

Fiago then shared an image of the notice that the game was moved, showing that there would instead be a ‘doubleheader’ on July 22.

The soccer fan was surprised by this, taking to X/Twitter to state: “Wait a second, this means they’re playing TWO games on the same day???”

Having two games played back-to-back is certainly not something that would, or probably even could, happen in competitive soccer matches around Europe, so Fiago’s shock is to be expected.

But a number of American fans have since taken to the comments section to explain that it is actually quite common in MLB.

One fan wrote: “It’s called a doubleheader and they used to schedule them and now we only do them when a game gets rained out. It’s kinda awesome.”

Another added: “Yes, it’s called a doubleheader… two games played in same day with same 2 teams with an intermission between… prepare for a loooong, but fun day and evening at [the] ballpark.”

A third commented: “Doubleheaders are played often during the season. Baseball isn’t as strenuous as other team sports like football, soccer, basketball, hockey.”

“Two games, usually shorter ones (if one of the teams is ahead after both/or home team have/has outed 21 batters, it wins). Sometimes there are kit changes between the games (teams will use different uniforms for each game). Lineups also change a bit, especially the pitchers,” tweeted a fourth.

And another wrote: “Yeah, it’s a uniquely baseball thing to do. Not a guarantee but happens all the time.”
