Los Angeles Angels fired their scout for filming the Colorado Rockies coaching staff, but they were at risk of facing punishment from the MLB.
Justin Prinstein, the Angels scout who called himself ‘The Baseball Spy,’ garnered a lot of controversy when he used his cellphone to record Rockies coaches during a scouting trip.
Even though filming by scouts is not prohibited under the MLB’s rules, the Angels quickly took action against the scout and apologized to the Rockies organization for the action.
Los Angeles Angels will not be punished for scout spying incident
According to The Athletic, the Los Angeles Angels will not face any punishment from the MLB for the actions of Justin Prinstein.
The reporting suggested that Prinstein recorded the Colorado Rockies coaching staff of his own volition, and he was not instructed to do so by the Angels.
Given that the MLB has been a lot more strict with recording rules after the Houston Astros controversy in 2020, some expected the league to take action against the Angels.
However, it appears the Angels immediately taking action and apologizing to the Rockies for the incident has convinced the MLB that the scout was acting independently.
How Justin Prinstein came to be known as the ‘Baseball Spy’
While Prinstein had only been with the Angels for just six months, his reputation as the ‘Baseball Spy’ goes back many years.
Prinstein was an independent freelance baseball writer for years, and even hosted a podcast called ‘The Baseball Spy’ from 2019 to 2024.
However, the podcast only featured two episodes during that time, and seemingly ended a short while after Prinstein became a scout for the Cincinnati Reds in 2023.
Hopefully, the Angels can quickly move on from this fiasco, as it has put a negative spotlight on the franchise and raised questions about the way they operate.
