England‘s place in the Euro 2020 final against Italy tomorrow hasn’t exactly gone down well north of the border as Scotland fans watch through their fingers at the Auld Enemy finally bringing football (almost) home – but one Scottish newspaper’s show of support for the Azzuri has backfired spectacularly.
The National‘s front page bizarrely smashes imagery and quotes Star Wars and Braveheart together into a mess of insecurity and inadequcy as they quote Princess Leia’s famous line from Star Wars over the top of an image of Roberto Mancini mocked up to look like a diminuitive Australian actor.
While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to see your rivals lose (Hell will freeze over before you catch me supporting Celtic for example), The National’s front page splash takes it to a whole new level.

What arguably makes it even more ridiculous is the line “we can’t take another 55 years of them banging on about this” while using a photoshopped image from the Hollywood butchering of the Wars of Independence which only happened a little over 700 years ago.
For some Scotland fans, it was just too much as they were left cringing at the pettiness as they took to Twitter to voice their opinion.
Here are some of the comments from mortified Scots ahead of the Euro 2020 final:
