Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has given his verdict on Aston Villa star Jack Grealish’s substitution against Denmark this week.

Grealish made headlines for the wrong reasons on Wednesday after being subbed on only to later be subbed off against Denmark in a move that raised a number of eyebrows across the country.

Wright has now given his view on the situation, and he says that Grealish handled it brilliantly and that his reaction has made him even more confident of his ability.

What’s been said?

Wright gave his view on the Grealish situation.

“I feel for Grealish because it was interesting. I didn’t want to say this on the tele, because you need the time to go into it. Him getting subbed and the way he took it was magnanimous and it was fantastic. It was all about the team and he took that. As we saw years ago with Ricky Villa in the FA Cup he was substituted, came back on the Thursday and scored one of the greatest goals in history, and you hope that can happen for someone like Grealish,” Wright said.

“But the fact that he took it so well because it’s all about the team was really brilliant of him, and it makes me even more confident of his progress and what he’s going to go on to do.”

Mature

It has to be said that Grealish’s reaction to being taken off was very mature.

Any player would have every right to kick off if they were subbed off just after coming on in a Euros semi-final, but Grealish knew he was doing his part for the team and graciously took his place on the bench.

In the end, it worked as England progressed to the final, but if Grealish had been annoyed about his manager’s decision it would have been understandable.

Fingers crossed the England star can emulate Ricky Villa all those years ago by scoring a goal in the final.
