Anthony Gordon was forced to watch on from the bench as England fell just short of winning Euro 2024.

The Newcastle United star jumped ahead of some household names to force his way into Gareth Southgate‘s squad.

However, Anthony Gordon‘s trip to Germany culminated in a measly four minutes of on-pitch action.

It was one of many questions and concerns around Southgate’s management of his squad – especially as Gordon looked superb during his short yet sweet cameo.

The 23-year-old will now return to St James’ Park ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, and he will hope to continue where he left off in Tyneside.

HITC understands that Eddie Howe is pushing for Gordon to be offered a new contract at the club amid interest from Liverpool.

Gary Lineker reveals what he said to Anthony Gordon

With England lacking the pace and directness that Gordon provides, his lack of minutes at Euro 2024 is something Southgate will have to reflect on.

He was given just four minutes to showcase what he brings to the team and he did just that against Slovenia in the group stage.

Lineker revealed that he bumped into the Newcastle winger and had a few comforting words for him after England’s loss in the final.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said “I saw Anthony Gordon after the game and I said to him briefly – I feel for you in this tournament, I think you should have got more minutes.

“And I went, don’t worry, you will get more chances. It will happen for you.”

Howe will have a job on his hands helping Gordon to overcome his summer blues with England.

He looked dejected on the sidelines when not involved and the agony of the final will only dent his confidence further.

But Gordon will have to shake off the disappointment and hit the ground running as he has a crucial role to play for Newcastle next season as they pursue a route back to European football.
