Thomas Tuchel has agreed a new two-year deal with England ahead of the World Cup this summer.

Tuchel’s existing contract would have expired after the tournament in the United States.

The German head coach is now prepared to lead the Three Lions at the 2028 European Championship on home soil.

Most England fans will be pleased with the announcement, but Gareth Southgate may have provided cause for concern.

Thomas Tuchel makes the opposite decision to Gareth Southgate

Southgate once turned down an England contract extension before a tournament after learning from Fabio Capello’s mistake.

Capello signed a new two-year deal before the 2010 World Cup, seeing him through to the following Euros.

Southgate believes that Capello’s decision put England under more pressure and negatively impacted the team.

“They offered me a new contract,” Southgate explained months ago.

“I didn’t think signing a new contract before the tournament would be a good idea because I’d seen Fabio Capello do that years earlier, and it created tension.

“‘Why is he getting a new contract before the tournament? It should be after.’ I thought it actually increased the pressure on the team.”

Southgate’s words will concern England fans now that Tuchel has just agreed to stay for another two years.

Why Thomas Tuchel’s contract situation is different from Gareth Southgate’s

The difference between Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate or Fabio Capello is that Tuchel was being linked with top clubs in England.

Had he not signed a new deal with England, Tuchel would have had to deal with rumours about joining Manchester United.

That would have created much more speculation in the English media than signing a new contract.

By deciding his future now, Tuchel has shown English fans and players that he is committed to achieving success, if not now, then in two years.
