Celtic legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has admitted he is stunned by Leicester City’s reported ambition to appoint Ange Postecoglou as a potential replacement for Brenden Rodgers as manager of the club.
Writing in the Sunday Post, the Scotland icon stated his opinion about current rumours of Leicester looking at making a move to appoint Postecoglou as their new manager should Rodgers, another former Celtic coach, face the chop by the Foxes board.
Leicester currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League after a disastrous start to the new season following a hectic summer that saw key defender Wesley Fofana leave with the club making just one new senior signing, with key players such as Youri Tielemans and James Maddison also looking close to an exit in January.
After such a whirlwind few months, Rodgers’ position at Leicester is on the line, and reports suggest that Leicester could move to appoint Postecoglou as a replacement for the Northern Ireland manager, yet Celtic legend Dalglish isn’t convinced at all that the Australian coach will leave Glasgow for the Premier League.
Dalglish said: “For me, though, that is a non-starter. Why would Ange want to leave Celtic to go there? Why would he leave a Champions League club for a team that may well end up fighting a relegation battle in the Premier League? So I would doubt that Ange would have a club such as Leicester City on his radar.”
The Hoops legend added: “He has rebuilt Celtic. The fans love him, and he loves the fans. It would take something special to break up that relationship. If he was linked with a top-six club down south, then that may well be a different story. That kind of thing would be a potential game-changer.”
Postecoglou could be tempted by Leicester if move to appoint is made
Moving to Leicester from Celtic at this stage in the club’s cycles would be quite the revelation from Postecoglou, however, the Foxes appointing the former J-League manager is hardly a step in the wrong direction for the Hoops boss, who could be in the Premier League sooner than we think.
Indeed, with the proper backing, Leicester are one of the best-ran clubs in all of England, and given how close the Foxes were to UEFA Champions League qualification under Rodgers, Postecoglou could be the man to get them over the line in the years to come, though a move this season feels extremely unlikely.
