Gabby Agbonlahor has criticised Gary McAllister on Twitter after Steven Gerrard was given his marching orders by Aston Villa on Thursday – meaning assistant manager McAllister is likely to follow the Liverpool legend out of the club.

A sixth Premier League defeat in 11 games saw Villa slip to 17th place with just nine points from 11 games. It was probably the worst of the lot last night, a 3-0 loss to Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage – down to 10 men.

Gerrard has failed to take Villa forward from when he swapped the Rangers job for Villa Park. That is, despite plenty of spending. However, two his big summer signings in Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara have picked up big injuries.

McAllister worked as Gerrard’s assistant manager at Rangers and followed him to Villa. His second spell as an assistant manager at Villa – having worked there as Gerard Houllier’s no.2 between 2010 and 2011. Agbonlahor criticised him.

While there is plenty to be said for giving a manager time, and letting him build – this was the right decision by the Villa board. They might want to have given Gerrard time, but fans have become so angry that it was the only choice.

The atmopshere at Villa Park following the 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea was pretty toxic. Those that travelled to London displayed the same feeling. Attention now turns to who will replace Gerrard. Brentford’s Thomas Frank is an option.

That is according to TalkSPORT, while the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel have been loosely linked. But it was the right move by the Villa board and something had to give. It will be interesting to see who comes in next.
