What were the funniest football quotes of 2022? As we approach 2023, comments from the likes of Wayne Rooney are certainly worth revisiting.

At the risk of feeding into stereotypes, footballers are not commonly known for their intelligence, and some of those who find themselves involved in the sport have produced a few hilarious quotes as a result.

So, what are the funniest football quotes of 2022? Let’s take a look…

Funniest football quotes 2022

Jack Grealish meets a camel

We’ll start with Jack Grealish, who described his meeting with a camel in Qatar in a similar manner to how an eight-year-old may have done, with all due respect to eight-year-olds across the globe.

The Manchester City No.10 told talkSPORT: “There was a camel and that as well, I got on the camel’s back, there was a bird, I don’t know what bird it was. The camel fully stood up, I was so high, I was scared.

“I got on it but I didn’t think it would go as high as it did because I didn’t realise how big it would be and when it stood up it was so big.”

A rollercoaster of emotions, to say the least.

Shaun Wright-Phillips & fractions

As aforesaid, some footballers are not the smartest, and Shaun Wright-Phillips clearly struggles when it comes to division.

While commentating on a game for BBC Radio 5 Live, the son of Ian Wright said: “Nine times out of ten, if you give him three chances, he’ll score two.”

Even now, we are finding it hard to get our heads around.

Eni Aluko’s Richarlison blunder

Another person involved in football who seemingly didn’t listen during maths at school is Eni Aluko.

When praising Richarlison and his excellent goalscoring record for Brazil, the 35-year-old said: “Richarlison has 19 goals in 40 games, you do the math that’s a goal a game.”

Wayne Rooney shares very honest assessment of Everton stars

Speaking on Toffee TV about his breakthrough into the Everton first-team at the age of 16, Rooney revealed his very honest opinion of senior stars at the time, such as Duncan Ferguson.

The 37-year-old said: “For me to go in with Duncan (Ferguson), Stubbsy (Alan Stubbs), all of them who I have grown up watching, to then go and play with them, train with them every day and play with them, and then so quickly, I remember thinking: ‘These are crap!’ I couldn’t believe how bad some of them were.”

Eden Hazard less than impressed

Now, this one didn’t exactly come from the mouth of Eden Hazard, but it was aimed at him, leaving the Belgium international looking almost shellshocked during the World Cup.

The Real Madrid No.7 was told: “Recently, we noticed that you have gained weight. How are you dealing with this, and what caused it? Thank you.”

In our view, that “thank you” is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Ella Toone reacts as England Women win EURO 2022

Last but by no means the least, we have this gem of a quote from Ella Toone after she scored to help England defeat Germany 2-1 in the EURO 2022 final at Wembley back in July.

“I’m absolutely buzzing me head off” – nothing else needs to be said.
